FIGHT DRY SKIN WITH EVOO
Wintertime can be very drying to our skin and especially annoying for those of us prone to dry skin. With the cold weather and indoor heating, our skin takes on extreme conditions during this season. During the Winter months, people usually have the heating on because it’s cold! This reduces the humidity in the air and harder for the skin to draw and retain moisture. The cold weather, along with rain and wind, will strip off the natural oils from the skin leaving it dry. We also tend to take hotter showers which damages skin as well.
One way to combat dry skin in the winter is to moisturize and hydrate. But with the tremendous varieties of skin moisturizers, which should one choose?
At Kardamas, we specialize in pure, EVOO - short for extra virgin olive oil. Our EVOO is cold-pressed and 100% pure and perfect to apply to your skin. Olive oil has been used as a cosmetic by the Greeks since ancient times and now it is recognized for its beneficial properties for your skin, nails and hair! EVOO is rich in fatty acids that help dry skin, leaving it smooth and moisturized.
Why EVOO is Good for Dry Skin
EVOO is considered one of nature’s purest ingredients for cosmetic use on skin and hair. It’s a natural moisturizer, perfect for winter time dryness, while at the same time it works wonders on the skin, nourishing it with its nutrients and fatty acids. It’s rich in vitamins A, D, K and E, polyphenols, phytosterols, tocopherols, squalene and other triterpenes, oleic and other acids and antioxidants, as well as trace amounts of calcium and potassium.
Extra virgin olive oil has healing properties on the skin because of squalene, a triterpene found in high concentration in EVOO. Squalene and oleic acid promote hydration, moisture and rejuvenation.
EVOO is great for removing makeup, while moisturizing it at the same time. In order to fully remove makeup from the surface of the skin, you’ll need to use warm water or some surfactant afterwards.
The vitamins and antioxidants in EVOO help prevent premature aging and protect against environmental damage to your skin .
EVOO is an Emollient & an Occlusive Moisturizer
Did you know there are three types of moisturizers? Humectants, Emollients and Occlusives, all different depending on how it moisturizes the skin.
Humectants attract water from the environment and the deeper cells of the skin, towards the upper layers that are dry.
Emollients fill in the gaps between the skin cells to create a smooth and velvety surface.
Occlusives seal in the moisture by creating a barrier on the upper layer of the skin and preventing water from evaporating.
EVOO is not a humectant. And that’s why combining olive oil with honey or aloe Vera in face masks works so well on hydration and moisturizing.
Keep in mind, that as wonderful as it can be, EVOO application on skin may not be suitable for everybody. People with oily skin should consider other oils such as grape seed, pumpkin seed and sunflower oil for their face. As well as people who have eczema or acne, as other oils may be more suitable for your skin type. But remember to always do a patch test first whenever you’re applying products for the first time on your skin.
Ways to Moisturize Skin with EVOO
It’s very easy to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized with EVOO. We’ve created a daily beauty routine to keep your skin healthy not just in the Winter, but all year long!
Starting with your face, use EVOO to wipe away the makeup and environmental impurities. Apply a small amount of extra virgin olive oil on a cotton pad to wipe your face skin for about 1 minute. After that, use a warm damp towel for about 2-3 times to remove any excess oils from your face. Finally, leave a warm damp towel on your face for about 1-2 minutes, to open the pores even more and prepare your skin for EVOO exfoliation.
Moisturize your dry skin even more by replacing common products you’ve been using all this time with EVOO, such as makeup removers, masks, shaving creams, lip balms and nail/hand creams.
Fight dryness with EVOO during winter time by always remembering to moisturize, even when doing other activities, other than your beauty routine. For example, you can moisturize chapped hands, while cooking. Simply apply a small amount to your hands and watch them turn into velvet! If it’s possible to focus the application on other areas too, such as elbows and knees, that’s even better.
EVOO has a high concentration of fatty acids and other beneficial compounds that do wonders for the skin. We recommend using only premium quality extra virgin olive oil on your face. Remember that it doesn’t matter how much stuff you put on your face to moisturize, if you don’t drink enough water, it will be harder to fight dryness.
