FETA ‘SAGANAKI’ WITH GREEK HONEY AND SEEDS

Fried feta cheese is extremely loved among the Greek population and it’s a type of cheese that’s never missed from a Greek table. In Greece we call it ‘Saganaki’. You might have seen it in the menus of Greek taverns. In this recipe we will show you how to make traditional ‘Feta Saganaki’ with Greek honey and seeds. There are a few variations of this dish, but this is our most favorite!

But who saw feta and thought it would end up being so tasty if fried?

Origins of Feta ‘Saganaki’ with Greek Honey and Seeds

Feta is a type of Greek cheese, we all know it. Saganaki on the other hand, might be a new word for many. The word originates from the Turkish ‘sahan’ which is the name of a type of copper pan used for frying. Various types of cheese can be used for Saganaki and there are a few different ways to prepare it, such as with filo pastry or batter, with lemon or with Greek honey, with seafood or not, etc.

So Feta Saganaki essentially means Feta cheese fried in a pan. Nowadays of course, no one fries in copper pans. Fried Feta cheese with Greek honey is a very popular ‘meze’ in Greek cuisine and is usually accompanied with Ouzo, Raki or Tsipouro.

But enough with all that and let’s move on to the recipe!

Traditional Feta Saganaki with Greek Honey and Seeds Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cup all purpose flour

  • 4-5 pieces of Greek Feta cheese(about half inch height each)

  • 2 eggs

  • water

  • 1 cup sesame seeds

  • extra virgin olive oil for frying

  • ½ cup honey for dressing

Directions

First of all, cut the feta into small pieces, like in the photo above. Put your Greek honey aside for now, as you’ll be needing it later. Prepare a bowl with water. Whisk your eggs(both whites and yolks) in a separate bowl. Use a plate for the flour, wide enough to easily dip each feta piece inside. Use another plate for the sesame seeds. Fill a frying pan with extra virgin olive oil, about 3 inches deep and put it on medium heat.

Now, grab a feta piece gently and dip into the water first, then into the eggs. Make sure to  coat all sides. Then, dip the feta cheese into the flour and again, coat all its sides. Next, dip the same piece into the sesame seeds, coating it all over. Do the same for the rest of the pieces and fry until they become slightly gold, flipping them over once. Put them on a plate with a towel paper to soak in most of the oil. Now, pour some Greek Honey on top and serve while still hot and creamy!

Simple and fun wasn’t it? We are sure you’re going to love this recipe as much as we do. We prefer this method over the one with the filo pastry, because it’s simply divine! You can serve this dish as an appetizer on your table or as a surprise ‘meze’ when drinking with your friends!
